Wetmore family papers, 1659-1919 (inclusive).

The papers consist of materials relating to George Peabody Wetmore and his family. Correspondence and other papers document the lives of several of Wetmore's ancestors and reflect his interest in New England history. The papers also include letter books and account books of the mercantile firms of Prosper Wetmore & Brothers and Joseph and Joshua Grafton.

George Peabody Wetmore, son of William Shepard and Anstiss Derby (Rogers) Wetmore, was born in London, England, on August 2, 1846. He graduated from Yale in 1867 and received his LL.B. from Columbia Law School in 1869. That same year Wetmore was admitted to the bars of Rhode Island and New York. He was elected governor of Rhode Island in 1885 and served two terms. From 1894-1913 Wetmore was a member of the U.S. Senate. He died on September 11, 1921, in Boston, Massachusetts. From the...
